Five Unique Character Quirks That Will Make Your Characters Better

Five Unique Character Quirks That Will Make Your Story Unforgettable

Characters with quirks feel more real. It’s the little things—how they eat, what they avoid, the weird habits they don’t even realize they have—that make them feel like actual people rather than just words on a page. So if your character is feeling a little flat, why not give them a quirk that makes them stand out?

Here are five unique habits to bring them to life:

1. The Hyper-Specific Food Aversion

It’s not just “I don’t like tomatoes.” It’s “I will eat ketchup, salsa, and sun-dried tomatoes, but if a raw tomato so much as touches my sandwich, I will set it on fire.”

Maybe they’ll only eat cereal if the milk is exactly at the halfway point in the bowl. Or they love pizza—unless it has one of those air bubbles in the crust. Maybe they’ll only eat grapes if they’re cold, because warm grapes are clearly a crime against humanity.

This kind of quirk can be hilarious in everyday life, deeply frustrating to their friends, or even a sign of something deeper (like a childhood memory or a past trauma).

2. The Touch Aversion—Except for Them

They hate being touched. Hugs make them stiffen like a board. A pat on the shoulder? Immediate flinch. But then there’s that one person—the only exception. Maybe it’s an old friend, a childhood rival, or someone they can’t admit they have feelings for.

One day, that person casually grabs their hand, and suddenly, they don’t want to let go.

This is gold for character development, slow-burn romance, or just adding depth to a seemingly cold or distant character. Plus, it makes for fantastic tension when they’re suddenly in a situation where touch is inevitable—say, hiding in a cramped space together or patching up an injury.

3. The Random Obsession They Can’t Let Go Of

Your character knows way too much about one oddly specific thing. Maybe it’s every conspiracy theory about the moon landing, or they can name every species of poisonous plant in their region (for no reason at all).

Maybe they collect something weird—like old hotel key cards or discontinued candy flavors. Maybe they will fight to the death about the correct way to load a dishwasher (forks up, obviously).

This can be a funny quirk, a source of genuine expertise, or a way to show personality without an exposition dump.

4. The Overly Specific Superstition

They won’t walk under ladders—not because it’s bad luck, but because the last time they did, their car broke down, their favorite show got canceled, and they got a cavity all in the same week.

Or maybe they have a personal rule: never leave a conversation on a bad note, because what if that’s the last time you ever see them?

Superstitions make characters feel more human. Maybe they knock on wood three times before a big event. Maybe they have a lucky coin that’s been with them through every major life decision. Whether it’s logical or completely ridiculous, it’s something they believe—and that’s what makes it interesting.

5. The One Very Specific Lie They Always Tell

Your character lies about one thing—consistently, and for no good reason.

They always say they’ve seen The Godfather even though they haven’t. They claim they don’t cry at movies, but the first ten minutes of Up ruined them. They tell people they love spicy food, even though they turn red after a single jalapeño.

It’s not a big lie, but it’s a weirdly consistent one. And maybe, one day, someone calls them out on it—and suddenly, it’s more than just a quirk. It’s a story.

Quirks aren’t just there for fun—they make characters feel alive. The key is to make them specific and personal, something that influences their daily life and their relationships.

Which one of these quirks would you give your character? Or better yet—do you have one of these quirks yourself?
